Prior to that he worked as a professional spokesperson in the political campaign management industry.
He received a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service degree from Georgetown University in 1968 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from Golden Gate University Law School in 1977. He served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam, attaining the rank of Captain of Infantry, and later as the press liaison for the 6th US Army, Presidio of San Francisco.
